What to bring on the Tikal Sunset Tour

  • Your passport, plus your park tickets on screen if you booked the US$35 option
  • 1.5 L of water per person: the first hours are under the midday sun
  • A wide hat and sunscreen, since the Great Plaza is open grass and stone

  • Repellent and long trousers for the mosquitoes that rise at dusk

Things to know before your Tikal Sunset Tour

  • You arrive in the hottest hours. The group reaches Tikal around 1:15 PM, when the Great Plaza has little shade. Bring water, a hat and sunscreen; the walk gets cooler as the afternoon goes on.
  • Clouds can hide the sun. Sunset is clear more often than sunrise, but from May to October afternoon showers are common, and September is the wettest month. We never promise a perfect sunset.
  • The sunset time changes. The sun sets between about 5:20 PM (December) and 6:35 PM (July), and the van is back in Flores by 8:00 PM.
  • You walk out at dusk. After sunset the group walks back to the parking area as the light fades: bring a flashlight or use your phone light.
  • Stairs. Temple II and the Lost World pyramid are climbed by wooden staircases. Temple I cannot be climbed.
  • Group size varies from 5 to 25; everyone walks at the pace the guide sets.
  • Mosquitoes come out at dusk: bring repellent and long pants.
  • Bathrooms exist only at the visitor center: use them before the walk.
  • Cash and signal: the park has no ATM and almost no mobile coverage, so carry quetzales.
  • Park tickets cannot be refunded; each one works for a month from the visit date picked at purchase.
  • Payment: the with-tickets option is booked with a 50% deposit and the balance is charged automatically 2 days before the tour; the without-tickets option is paid in full.

About the tour

WhatsApp Us!

The Tikal sunset tour needs no early wake-up. At noon a van collects you by the "Yo Amo Petén" letters in Flores, stops in El Remate and reaches Tikal National Park around 1:15 PM. The sun is strong at that hour, so your guide starts in the Great Plaza, where Temple I, the Temple of the Great Jaguar, faces Temple II across the grass, with the North and Central Acropolis on either side.

For the next hours you walk the city with a certified guide: you climb the wooden stairs of Temple II for a view over the plaza, step through the palaces of the Acropolis and learn how Tikal ruled the Maya lowlands for centuries. As the afternoon cools, the day tours head back to their buses, and the jungle gets louder: howler monkeys start calling, spider monkeys move through the canopy and toucans and parrots cross the clearings.

The last stop is the Lost World (Mundo Perdido), one of the oldest complexes in Tikal. You climb its great pyramid, about 31 m high, and watch the sun sink behind the forest while the light turns the stone gold. When the colors fade, the group walks back through the darkening jungle to the van and is back in Flores by 8:00 PM.

Why do travelers choose the Tikal sunset tour?

Travelers choose the Tikal sunset tour to see Tikal without a 3 AM alarm and to stay in the park after the day tours leave. Afternoon skies are clear more often than at sunrise, and the wildlife comes out as the heat fades.

  • No early wake-up: a 12:00 PM pickup after a full night of sleep and a slow morning in Flores.
  • A better chance of seeing the sun: the morning mist is long gone, so the sunset is visible more often than the sunrise.
  • Tikal after the crowds: day visitors leave in the afternoon, and the Lost World feels calm at sunset.
  • Wildlife at dusk: howler and spider monkeys, toucans, parrots and coatis are most active in the last hours of light.
  • Golden light on the temples: Temple I and the Great Plaza glow in the late afternoon, the best light for photos.

Have your tickets already? Join for US$35

At checkout, pick "Without tickets or kids 9 and under" next to your date, and keep both tickets on your phone: the sunset ticket is an add-on to the entrance, never a replacement.
